As the sommelier for the Moore-Morris History and Culture Center’s upcoming event, “Pour & Explore: Unique American Wines,” Davis Campbell of Wines Together is ready to guide attendees on a captivating journey through the fascinating world of American-made wines. With years of experience and a deep passion for wine education, Davis has dedicated his career to uncovering and sharing the stories and flavors that American wines have to offer.

In this Q&A, Davis shares insights into his journey, what makes American wines distinct, and what attendees can look forward to at this exciting event coming up on Friday, August 9th, at 6:30 PM at our historic Center…

Q: Tell us a little about yourself. What first piqued your interest in wine to pursue it as a career? What are you most passionate about when it comes to sharing the stories, complexities, and history of wine?
A: I first became interested in wine while working in restaurants in New York. I was lucky to have mentors and chefs who were willing to share their wine and knowledge so I could learn the basics and also what I liked! The more I learned, the more I enjoyed the stories and sharing of wine. I most enjoy introducing people to new wines or wine areas. The joy of finding a new favorite in any part of life is rewarding.

Q: What makes American wine unique?
A: American wines have been shaped by the American palate, which is different than other areas of the world. While there are some specific wine guidelines in every area of the country, there is more freedom to explore different varieties and techniques than in other parts of the world.

Q: Could you highlight a few key moments or figures in American wine history that have contributed to what it has become today?
A: You’ll have to come to the wine class for this! It’s a deep, interesting history going back to the 1600’s….

Q: For those new to wine appreciation, what advice do you have for exploring and appreciating unique wine?
A: My philosophy on wine has always been “drink what you like!” However, since we are lucky to live in a city with fantastic wine shops, there is always more to explore! I started Wines Together based on this premise. Wines that I enjoy may not be wines that you enjoy, and vice versa. There is joy and community in sharing wines. Keeping an open mind (and palate) is important.
