WHAT:
Abram Maury purchased 640 acres of land from Major Anthony Sharp and laid out the town of Franklin, Tennessee.

KEY FIGURES:
Abram Maury: Land surveyor who had been hired by Major Sharp to survey his military land grant.
Major Anthony Sharp: Awarded 3400 acres of land as part of his land grant for serving in the American Revolutionary War
KEY EVENTS:
March 1786:
Major Anthony Sharp receives a 3,840-acre military grant from North Carolina for his service in the Revolutionary War.
August 13th, 1799:
Abram Maury buys 640 acres of that grant from Sharp for $1,500.
October 26, 1799:
The Tennessee legislature officially creates Williamson County and designates "Franklin" as the county seat.
April 1800
Maury, a surveyor, files his plat map. He sets aside 109 acres for the town, creating a grid of 16 blocks and 192 lots.
1800
Maury begins selling town lots for $10 each. By the end of the year, over 60 lots are sold. The courthouse, a one-story log building, is established in the Public Square.
1807
The log courthouse is replaced with a more permanent brick building. In 1858- the courthouse you see today was built.
October 1815
Franklin is officially incorporated. A city government with a mayor and board of aldermen is established to manage the growing trade center.
